Scrapbooking Tip: Keep a ‘Scraps’ Box

One of the simplest, most effective habits I’ve picked up in my scrapbooking journey is this: always keep a ‘Scraps’ box or drawer nearby.

It might sound like a small thing, but trust me, it makes a big difference. This box —whether it’s a desk drawer, a small wooden box or even just a reused packaging box —becomes a catch-all for the tiny leftovers that naturally pile up during a creative session. Think washi tape offcuts, die-cut scraps, punched paper shapes, paper you ripped and only half used or tags that didn’t quite suit your layout.

Instead of letting these pieces clutter your desk or disappear into the depths of your drawer, having a designated spot to collect them keeps your space clearer and gives you a ready-made palette to draw from the next time you sit down to create.

What’s lovely about this habit is how it encourages spontaneity. When you're starting a new page, you can dip into your tray and often find the perfect embellishment waiting there. A scrap of kraft paper might layer beautifully beneath a photo, or a leftover leaf sticker might complete a corner you hadn’t planned to decorate. These little elements often spark new ideas or help bring a spread together in unexpected ways.

Over time, you’ll find that your scraps box becomes a mini mood board of your recent projects—filled with colours, textures and pieces that already reflect your style.

A few bonus tips:

  • Rotate regularly: Every month or so, empty your box. Keep what still inspires you and recycle or pass along the rest.
  • Use small containers within it: If you have a mix of paper bits, labels and stickers, grouping them can save time when you're in the flow.
  • Take it with you: If you craft on the go, a portable ‘bits and bobs’ tin or pouch can be a brilliant way to bring inspiration with you.

Give it a try—your future self (and your desk) will thank you.
